New York City

Black-and-white observations of New York City, photographed over different seasons through the routines, spaces, and atmospheres of daily life.

Photographed over eight months, NYCBW explores New York City through black-and-white film from the perspective of a resident. Continuing an earlier exploration of monochrome photography, the project moves beyond the distractions of color to focus on the city’s shapes: bridges, buildings, train platforms, streets, and the atmosphere that surrounds them.

Made during the routines of everyday life rather than dedicated photographic excursions, the images observe fleeting moments and transient spaces that speak closely to the rhythms of New York. Although photographed primarily during winter, the series extends into spring and early summer, reflecting the gradual pace at which the work was assembled. Snow, rising steam, and figures in motion recur throughout the photographs, becoming as emblematic of the city as its most recognizable landmarks.

While New York remains unmistakable, NYCBW presents the city not as a postcard, but as a living organism—defined less by its icons than by the everyday spaces, movements, and atmospheres that sustain it.
