Lima

Lima en Monocromo explores Lima through black-and-white film photography, shifting attention from color to contrast, texture, and overlooked subjects — in particular the gallinazos, coexisting between garbage and the sacred.

Lima en Monocromo was my first exploration of black-and-white photography. Having begun shooting street photography in Lima, it felt natural to return to the city while experimenting with monochrome film stocks for the first time.

Shot instinctively while walking through Lima, the main challenge was to divert my attention away from the city’s vibrant colors and instead focus on contrast, texture, and scenes with a strong physicallity capable of justifying the absence of color.

At the center of the series is an unexpected encounter with a group of black vultures gathered atop the Parroquia El Sagrario de Lima. Initially photographed by chance, the birds gradually became a recurring presence within the work. Few animals are as tied to Lima’s identity as the gallinazos, sharing the city’s cradle alongside the Catholic imagery that shaped its origins. Their dark silhouettes against the church create an unsettling yet solemn image — almost as if the animals themselves were devoted to the building.
